There are few wildlife experiences that demand as much patience, perseverance and respect for nature as the search for the Snow Leopard.

Hidden amongst the towering mountains of Ladakh, where deep valleys carve through barren landscapes and ancient monasteries overlook frozen rivers, lives one of the world's most elusive predators. Perfectly camouflaged against the rocky slopes of the Himalaya, the Snow Leopard has earned its legendary status not simply because it is rare, but because it is so remarkably difficult to find.

Every winter, as heavy snow blankets the highest peaks, Blue Sheep, Asiatic Ibex and other mountain ungulates descend to lower elevations in search of food. Following them, almost invisibly, comes the Ghost of the Mountains.

Our expedition takes you deep into the spectacular valleys of Ulley and Hemis, regarded by many naturalists as among the finest places anywhere in the world to observe wild Snow Leopards. Here, dramatic cliffs rise thousands of feet above frozen streams, Golden Eagles patrol the skies and every ridgeline has the potential to reveal an unforgettable sighting.

Unlike a conventional safari, there are no roads leading directly to wildlife. Every day is shaped by the movements of the mountains themselves. Experienced local trackers leave before dawn to search for fresh signs, scanning distant cliffs, studying tracks in the snow and following the movements of Blue Sheep and other prey species. Guided by their extraordinary knowledge of the landscape, we spend our days patiently observing the valleys through professional spotting scopes, allowing nature to unfold at its own pace.

The expedition offers far more than the pursuit of a single species.

Herds of Blue Sheep negotiate near-vertical cliffs with astonishing ease, Himalayan Wolves occasionally patrol the valleys, Red Foxes hunt along frozen streams and Lammergeiers drift effortlessly on mountain thermals. Birdlife is exceptional, while the villages themselves provide a fascinating glimpse into the resilient culture and traditions of Ladakh.

At Beyond Wild, we have been leading Snow Leopard expeditions for well over a decade and work alongside some of the most experienced local Snow Leopard trackers in the Himalaya. Their understanding of the landscape, combined with years of field experience, greatly enhances our chances of success while ensuring that every expedition is conducted responsibly and with complete respect for this fragile mountain ecosystem.

Day 1

Arrive Leh

Upon arrival at Leh Airport, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel.
At an altitude of approximately 11,500 feet, the first day is reserved entirely for acclimatisation. The dry mountain air and reduced oxygen levels require the body to adjust gradually, making rest the most important activity of the day.
Depending on your arrival time and how you are feeling, you may choose to relax at the hotel or enjoy a gentle walk around Leh Bazaar.

Day 2

Acclimatisation | Orientation | Local Exploration

A second acclimatisation day greatly improves comfort and safety before entering the higher valleys.
Following breakfast, we conduct a detailed expedition briefing covering Snow Leopard behaviour, field techniques, safety, photography and the role played by local conservation initiatives.
Later, we explore the surrounding landscapes around Gya and nearby valleys, offering opportunities for birdwatching, landscape photography and perhaps even our first wildlife sightings.
We shall also be visiting the local monasteries and the iconic Shanti Stupa.
Overnight in Leh.

Day 3

Leh to Ulley

After breakfast, we leave Leh and drive west towards the spectacular valleys of Ulley.
En route, we stop at the famous Spituk Marshes, an excellent location for winter birdlife before continuing through increasingly dramatic mountain scenery.
Upon arrival, settle into our mountain lodge and meet the local tracking team who will accompany us over the coming days.
As evening approaches, we may undertake our first wildlife scanning session from nearby viewpoints.

Day 4 · Days 4 to 8

Snow Leopard Expedition

The next five days are devoted entirely to exploring the remarkable mountains surrounding Ulley and Hemis.
Every morning begins before sunrise, when our local trackers spread out across the surrounding valleys in search of fresh Snow Leopard signs. Their intimate understanding of the terrain, accumulated over many years, allows them to identify promising locations based on tracks, prey movements and recent sightings.
Following breakfast, we head to whichever valley offers the greatest potential that day. Some days involve leisurely walks to elevated viewpoints overlooking vast mountain landscapes, while others are spent quietly observing distant ridgelines through spotting scopes for hours at a time.
Packed lunches are generally enjoyed in the field, allowing us to remain close to wildlife activity throughout the day.
Although the Snow Leopard remains our primary objective, the expedition regularly produces memorable encounters with Blue Sheep, Himalayan Wolves, Red Foxes, Golden Eagles, Lammergeiers and numerous high-altitude bird species.
Each evening we return to the lodge, where warm Ladakhi meals, hot soup and conversations around the heater provide the perfect conclusion to another rewarding day in the mountains.

Day 9

Return to Leh

Enjoy one final morning wildlife excursion before beginning the scenic drive back to Leh.
The remainder of the day is at leisure, providing time to relax, visit the local markets or simply reflect upon the extraordinary experiences of the past week.

Day 10

Departure

After breakfast, transfer to Leh Airport for your onward flight.
Your expedition may come to an end here, but the memories of Ladakh's frozen valleys, towering mountains and, with a little luck, the unforgettable sight of the Ghost of the Mountains will remain with you for many years to come.

Good to know before you travel+

This is a genuine Himalayan expedition rather than a conventional wildlife holiday. Conditions can be challenging, but they are also what make the experience so rewarding.
Winter in Ladakh is cold, dry and exceptionally beautiful.
Daytime temperatures generally range between 5°C and 12°C in sunny conditions, while mornings and evenings frequently fall below -20°C, particularly in Ulley and the surrounding valleys. Despite the cold, the dry Himalayan climate often makes the conditions more comfortable than expected, provided you are dressed appropriately.
The expedition takes place between approximately 10,200 and 13,500 feet above sea level.
Our itinerary includes two full days in Leh specifically for acclimatisation before travelling to Ulley. This gradual approach significantly reduces the risk of altitude-related illness and allows your body to adapt comfortably to the thinner air.
Every day follows the rhythm of the Snow Leopard rather than a fixed timetable.
Before sunrise, our local trackers head into the valleys to search for fresh pugmarks, prey movements and other signs that may reveal the whereabouts of a Snow Leopard. Their decades of experience and intimate knowledge of the terrain are invaluable throughout the expedition.
Following breakfast, we travel to the most promising location identified by the trackers. Some days involve short walks across rocky or snow-covered trails, while others are spent quietly scanning distant mountainsides through spotting scopes.
Lunch is usually enjoyed in the field, allowing us to remain close to any wildlife activity throughout the day.
By dusk, we return to the lodge, where warm Ladakhi meals, hot soup and lively discussions around the heater conclude another memorable day in the mountains.
Proper layering is the secret to remaining comfortable in Ladakh's winter conditions.
We recommend carrying:

A detailed packing checklist will be shared with all participants well before departure.
The expedition is suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness.
Daily walks are generally between 1 and 3 kilometres, often over uneven rocky trails or snow-covered ground, with frequent stops for wildlife observation. No technical trekking or mountaineering experience is required.
Snow Leopard sightings can never be guaranteed.
Nature determines the success of every expedition. Some days may involve long hours of patient observation, while others may reward us with unforgettable encounters. The uncertainty is precisely what makes every sighting so special.
