Dudhwa

Uttar Pradesh, India

There is something wonderfully untamed about Dudhwa. Stretching along the Indo-Nepal border, this vast wilderness protects one of the last remaining expanses of the Terai ecosystem, where towering grasslands, dense sal forests and sprawling wetlands create an environment unlike anywhere else in India.

About the destination

Why Dudhwa, and how to do it well

Dudhwa supports an extraordinary variety of wildlife, including Tigers, Leopards, Asian Elephants, Swamp Deer, Sloth Bears, Hog Deer, Hispid Hares and an exceptional diversity of birdlife. It is also one of the country’s most important strongholds for the endangered Bengal Florican and offers some of India’s finest opportunities to observe Barasingha in their natural habitat.

The reserve is explored through multiple tourism ranges, each revealing a different side of this rich floodplain landscape. Unlike many parks where a single species dominates the experience, Dudhwa rewards visitors who appreciate the intricate relationships between forests, grasslands, wetlands and the remarkable wildlife they sustain.

Tiger sightings are always possible, but Dudhwa is best experienced with an open mind and an appreciation for true wilderness. The silence of the forest, the calls of distant birds and the endless grasslands stretching towards the horizon make every safari feel like an expedition into one of India’s last great wild frontiers.

For naturalists, birdwatchers and travellers seeking an authentic wilderness beyond the usual safari circuit, Dudhwa remains one of the country’s most remarkable destinations.
